When Should I Service my Boiler?

Your boiler is without doubt the most important appliance in your home.

Without it, you have no hot showers, no hot baths, no warm water, no working radiators and an extremely cold home. That's why you need to look after it with the utmost care and get it serviced regularly by a qualified engineer.

But how often should you service it? Who should service it? And what are the benefits to servicing your boiler?

We've revealed all in this short blog post.

How often should you get your boiler serviced?

You should get your boiler serviced every 12 months.

Why?

Think of a boiler service like an MOT and service on a car. Without a regular service, your car will begin to breakdown. The same applies with the boiler. If you fail to service it regularly, sludge, rust and other debris will infiltrate your central heating system and cause your boiler to breakdown.

What are the benefits of a boiler service?

There are several benefits of servicing your boiler:

  • Reduced heating bills
  • Reduced likelihood of a faulty boiler
  • Reduced boiler repair costs
  • Quieter boiler

When's the best time to service a boiler?

The best time to service your boiler is during the summer/autumn months, just before the winter season when your boiler is about to be put into overdrive.

Who can service a boiler?

The only person that is legally qualified to service a gas boiler is a Gas Safe registered engineer.

If you hire a gas engineer that is not Gas Safe registered, not only are they working illegally, and not only are you not insured if it causes a gas leak/explosion, you're also putting yourself and your family at risk.

Always be sure to hire a Gas Safe registered engineer if you book your boiler in for a service.

What's included in a boiler service?

A boiler service will including all of the following checks:

  • Boiler controls
  • Gas and pressure flow
  • Internal main components
  • Flue and combustion releases
  • Safety device check
  • Electrical connections
  • Seal & valve check
  • A clean (if required)

Checking the above will ensure your boiler is in top condition for years to come.
